Show Notes: Comedian and Musician Ben Roy
THE TV SHOW
Roy and fellow Grawlix members Andrew Orvedahl and Adam Cayton-Holland enjoyed a three-season, 35-episode run on truTV with the half-hour comedy Those Who Can’t, which they also created and co-wrote. It’s the kind of show that attracts other comedians — as evidenced by a roster of co-stars and guest stars including Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel, Maria Thayer, Patton Oswalt, Cheri Oteri, Susie Essman, and the Sklar Brothers, among others. Those Who Can’t is now streaming on HBO Max.
THE STANDUP
It’s easy to see the copious tattoos and high-energy stage demeanor and make blanket assumptions about Roy’s comedy, but even his most ribald work tends to be built around sensitivity, sneakily-nuanced perspectives, and the kind of bottomless vocabulary that results from reading 50+ books per year (which, yes, he does). His newest album is coming this summer.
THE MUSIC
A chance invitation landed Roy on stage when he was 15 — and he’s been fronting bands ever since. For the better part of the past decade he’s been the face of surf-punk-dance outfit SPELLS, but his musical influences run deep, from Bad Religion to Cat Stevens and beyond.
THE PODCASTS
Scripted or unscripted? Take your pick. The Grawlix Saves the World finds Roy, Orvedahl, and Cayton-Holland trying to better themselves one arbitrary challenge at a time — even if it means sitting through all nine Fast and the Furious movies in a single week. And if that sounds a bit too straight-laced, well, good news: 97.9 The Rat Race is pure, unapologetic silliness.
